Renovating your home is no walk in the park. As a team who has been a party to renovations and has renovated spaces ourselves, we understand the undertaking in what being a renovator truly is. Renovation is far more than just a cosmetic uplift – it is a demolition, starting from the bottom, big time redesign that takes time, money, and dedication.
In hindsight, there are many things that we wish we knew prior to diving into our first renovation. Because of this, we felt compelled to share with you some first time renovator tips to get you started!
Be realistic
First thing’s first, be realistic. Now you may be asking yourself, ‘what do you mean to be realistic?’ Well, we mean you have to be thinking logically and within reason when it comes to your first renovation. You know how the saying goes – “Don’t bite off more than you can chew.” It’s the cardinal rule when it comes to renovation. Stick within what you know you can afford, and see to its end.
Once you’ve established a realistic budget and have come up with an initial idea of what you want renovated and in what capacity – it’s time to research who can best help you bring your vision to light [pun certainly intended], and what you’re going to need. Be sure to use reputable sources and credible contractors to see to it that your renovation is handled properly.
Approve your project!
A huge first time renovator must be to make sure that your renovation is in accordance with your local city/county ordinances. Too often we see incredible projects have to be halted and/or demolished because they did not get the proper approvals necessary. It is extremely, extremely important to do your research in this area and get all essential permits approved prior to beginning demolition & reno.
At this point you may be saying to yourself, ‘I just wanted to change my backsplash. Do I really need to take all of these steps?’… Well, truth be told, no. Minor cosmetic DIY renovations do not really require this much preparation. However, it is always better to be safer than sorry when undertaking any sort of renovation no matter how large or small.
